Building Personal Web Pages

There are 3 components to building a web page - web server space - usually provided by your ISP, an HTML editor, or page building wizard, and an upload tool or FTP program.  The easiest way is to use tools provided by your ISP or web host.  My ISP did not have a web page wizard at the time I built my page, so I had to learn some HTML.  There are some excellent resources available to learn HTML, including Teach Yourself HTML 4 in 24 hours, and HTML 4 for Dummies.  Both books are available at my local library, and there are free tutorials online.

I did learn to "hard code" a little bit using Notepad, but there are much easier HTML editors available. I used Front Page Express, which was included with Win98, and then I used Front Page.

If your ISP doesn't offer personal web space, there are several web hosting sites that web space starting at $0.00 for their most basic plans, with additional features available with paid subscriptions.

Next you will need to "publish" your page on the web.  This is done either with the upload tool provided by the site, or using an FTP tool.  The upload tools from the HTML editors are usually not recommended.  If your site allows FTP transfers, this is preferable.  After it is uploaded, you can use these tools to manage your page.  My ISP provided a web based FTP tool.

My page is pretty simple, and one of the sections I want to improve is the photo page - make it look more like a photo album - which might require some additional software.
