Please keep in mind the look of the confederate cavalryman/partisan. Some of these men were the elite and dressed the part. Some civillian clothing and fine tailored items are appropriate. Yellow was scarce and should be avoided. It is best to follow the specifications below as there is no doubt issued clothing was available. Remember, this is a guidline, not carved in marble. Please consult with an Officer or NCO before proceeding with variances. Veteran reenactors are encouraged to wear what they have, unless it's dark blue! You can customize your look in due time. Uniform & Clothing Shell jacket: Highly recommended Richmond Depot III in blue/gray kersey wool w/ 3-piece, hollow 1854 Maryland seal buttons buttons. This jacket is documented as a MD Cav jacket and an original belonging to Allen C. Redwood is pictured on Pg. 136 "Echos of Glory: Arms & Equipment of the Confederacy" Mainstream versions of this jacket are available in Gettysburg at Memories Past Historical Outfitters. Please see Bob, Nancy or Tom to order. Museum quality reproductions are aslo available, ask us for sutlers. 2nd option Richmond Depot II in gray jean cloth also w/MD Buttons. "C' Buttons are acceptable. No CSA buttons and No trim! Trousers: gray, brown or sky blue jean cloth. Federal sky blue wool is allowed in rare cases Shirts: unbleached muslin or woven pattern, no prints. Socks: Rag wool or Confederate cotton. Suspenders: Canvas with leather tabs . Hat: Civilian style with rolled brim, grosgrain tape on edge of brim, and band. Lining recommended. Kepis are good too, but only gray jean without yellow trim. Shoes: Brogans or Cavalry boots with heal plates - Try the Officer's Boots at www.caboots.com Eyewear: You must wear period eyewear or contact lenses. Modern eyewear is strictly forbidden at most events. If you canot wear contacts or prefer period eyewear, talk to Capt. Chesnut about ways to obtain period glasses. Maryland Crosses: The MD cross bottonee, symbol of Maryland Conferederates is worn on the jacket and is availble at Memories Past for about $4.00 Accoutrements Waist Belt with buckle: Maryland oval or CSA oval buckle with black leather belt. Or saber belt with shoulder belt and saber hangers and rectangular MD belt buckle. Cap box: Black leather. Carbine Cartridge Box: Belt mounted, black leather. Canteen: Tin drum or wood styles Haversack: Black "tarred" or white cotton. Eating utensils: Tin cup, Tin Plate , Knife, Fork, & Spoon. Weapons Carbine: J.P. Murray, Cook & Brother, or Enfield Musketoons, Mississippi Rifle muzzleloaders; 1859/63 Sharps and Maynard Model 2 Breech loaders from Regt. QM There are some cavalry model muzzle loaders available form Loyalist Arms in Canada -- but speak to member that has one before pursuing this. Revolver: .44 cal Colt army/navy or ’58 new army Remington, steel frame only. W/ black leather, right hip, butt forward flap holster. Saber: 1860 model light cavalry saber. Optional but required for Saber Drill Participation Tent 6 foot A frame 6' high & deep 8'4" wide or 9 foot A frame 6' high, 9' deep or 7 foot tall A frame 7' high, 9' deep w/ 1 door Try R& K Sutlers for tents All tents are canvas only. You will need to construct a wood pole set for them and obtain iron stakes. Talk to a member on how to do this. Bed roll The best way to go is bedroll comprised of a gum blanket (rain poncho), wool blankets or quilts. Comfort can be aided with a Mattress tick filled with straw or we have other ways to make this even more comfortable. It's best to talk to a member about your sleeping choices. Foul Weather gear Greatcoat: gray or brown jean civilain style or Federal issue sky blue Gum blanket: w/ neck slash. DOUBLES as a ground cloth! This is a basic list to get you started you will undoubtedly find other goodies on the way. Be sure to check with a member before you buy things that may be inappropriate. |
