Elders and Deacons

Elders are chosen by the people and work together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament to exercise leadership, government, and discipline within the church.  They have responsibility for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large.  They serve as faithful members of the Session.  It is their duty, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation.  Together with the pastor, they should encourage the people in the worship and service of God, equipping and renewing church members for their tasks within the church and their mission in the world.

The office of the Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  People of spiritual character, honest repute, living exemplary lives, showing brotherly and sisterly love and having good sound judgment are chosen for this office.  They minister to those in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.  They assist the Session to support the total work of the church.
